Sometimes a plant exhibits a
characteristic that's different
from the plant itself—say,
a flower is mauve instead of
pink, or the stems are red
rather than green. That
difference is called a sport,
the result of mutation. Usually
sports are considered
undesirable and are removed.
Sometimes, though, a sport looks
good enough to keep; it's
vegetatively propagated into a
