William Whiting trompe l'oeil fireplace for Cordelia Biddle and Steve Zettier
Design Defined: trompe•l'oeil
This French term meaning "fool the eye" is certainly an apt description for the fireplace in this room designed by William Whiting for mystery writers Cordelia Biddle and Steve Zettler, best known to readers as Nero Blanc of the Crossword Mysteries series. The faux stone blocks are riddled with faux bullet holes, moss, graffiti and weeds, and also feature a painting of the Biddle family crest. It’s a fun example of how to make a two-dimensional object look 3-D.
