  Want to infuse your rooms with passion, energy and excitement? Then introduce a little red, says interior designer Jayne Pelosi. After all, it's the color of love, fire, energy and, studies say, victory (think red power ties). But it's also the color of blood, and "seeing red" has never had a very positive connotation. But red doesn't have to have the spitfire strength of a Scarlett O'Hara. Consider coral, geranium, watermelon or cranberry—all shades of red that can warm up a room without burning down the house.   Thanks to our craving for more global color and pattern in our lives, ikat and ikat-inspired motifs are popping up everywhere, from textiles and tiles to Oscar de la Renta fashions. Ikat is an Indonesian word for "tied or bound," and the fabrics are, literally, tie-dyed, but not in a hippie-ish way. In a centuries-old painstaking process, the warp (the threads on the loom) and/or the weft (the yarn shuttled back and forth) are dyed before the weaving begins. The result is fascinating fuzzy-edged chevrons and patterns in vivid colors.

That old standby, the range hood, does lots more than freshen the air these days, as our Room of the Month illustrates. The kitchen, designed by Lou Ann Bauer, has design details galore, from beams and beautiful cherry cabinets to stenciled floors.
