If you've ever been on a subway in New York City, you may have noticed the rectangular white tiles that grace the walls of the stations. Yes, that is subway tile, installed beginning with the subterranean network's inception in 1904. Today we also use the term to describe a rectangular tile installed in an offset brick pattern, often in bathrooms. The tiles are more than nostalgic; they're durable and handsome. Both original subway tiles and reproductions are available from a variety of manufacturers.
